On offer here is a fine replica statue and a pair of amulets of Tauret, the hippopotamus Goddess. She was the patron deity of child birth and pregnant women and her very shape inspired such pregnant associations. Unlike a real hippopotamus, she walked on two legs and could incorporate the tail of the crocodile (as in this representation) to swish away any spiritual entanglements.

Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone she has a blue/green patina and is mounted on a felt based stand.

The rectangular amulet is a perfect match as it depicts Tauret in the same stance but in the form of a profile relief carving. The other amulet features a reclining hippo which was her sacred animal. A replica collector card of early 20th century design further rounds out the collection with a fine illustration of Taweret.

Background information

In both the statue and the amulet Taweret stands holding the 'Sa' knot which is a symbol of protection for children. Protection from evil and protection in childbirth.

The card illustration depicts her holding a dagger which was also used to ward off any would be trouble that could upset the delicate condition of the mother.

Men could also wear or hold the amulets to invoke the protection associated with them.

The promotion of it by Tauret in the statue in particular, gives the whole composition a highly charged symbol for a mother's protection during this most important time.
