On offer here is another rare replica featuring an interesting scene from Egyptian mythology. The proportions of the figures are pleasing with only a summary treatment of the inner details, quite typical of the era for inner or outer sarcophagus decoration.

Khnum with the head of a ram was the great creator god, fashioner of man out of clay on the potter's wheel, but here in this scene he is shown in the important role of spearing Seth in the form of a crocodile. Horus is more well known as a slayer of Seth in his various forms so this is considered a rare depiction.

The crocodile twists back to confront his attacker while Taweret the hippopotamus goddess in full regalia watches over the scene.

The presence of Taweret suggests the scene is associated with protection in birth or in this case, safe rebirth into the next world hence the need to destroy the forces of calamity that the crocodile represents.

Other deities line up behind Khnum to offer further assistance with Thoth the ibis god of wisdom and keeper of records immediately behind Khnum holding a scroll.
The mummiform figure represents the deceased whose rebirth is being fought for who in turn is flanked by Heka, the powerful god of magic 'whom even the gods fear' holding two magical serpent wands.

The scene is a highlight from a late period sarcophagus that is festooned with images of Egyptian mythology. One other similar sized highlight from this sarcophagus may also available in store and is well worth a look to see the same ancient artist's hand at work.
